The SBTi FLAG Guidance and AFi guidance both recommend a cut-off date of 2020. It also aligns with cut-off dates used in regulatory mechanisms such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

Target date: The date on which a certain company (or other entity issuing commitments or policies) intends to have fully implemented its commitments or policies. The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) has adopted a consensus recommendation that companies set a target date for eliminating deforestation and ecosystem conversion from their supply chains no later than 2025.

Reference date: The date from which deforestation or conversion associated with a given area or supply chain is measured and/or managed.

Traceability: The ability to follow a product or its components through stages of the supply chain (eg, production, processing, manufacturing, and distribution). In order to assure full traceability Businesses must collect geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the plots of land —the smallest identifiable production unit— where commodities are produced.

Plot (of land): An area of land with a particular ownership, land use, or other characteristic. A plot is frequently used as the basis for a cadaster or land registration system.

DCF Volume Verification Methodology: A Deforestation and Conversion-Free (DCF) Verification Methodology is a standardized framework used to assess and confirm that commodities or raw materials are produced without causing deforestation or the conversion of natural ecosystems after a specified cut-off date. For the present assessment this methodology is only valid when traceability to the plot of land —the smallest identifiable production unit— is established.

Progress on Commitments: The data presented in the table shows the tracking and evolution of public commitments made by traders regarding deforestation and conversion-free value chains.
