Progress on Commitments:
The data presented in the table shows the tracking and evolution of public commitments made by traders regarding deforestation and conversion-free value chains. These commitments include the forecast for the implementation of zero deforestation/conversion, the cutoff date for these processes, and the percentage of the total volume traceable back to the farm.
The key monitored indicators include:
- The forecast for the implementation of the zero deforestation/conversion commitment within the value chains;
- The cutoff date set for deforestation/conversion of native vegetation;
- The percentage of total volume traceable to supplying farms;
- The percentage of DCF (Deforestation and Conversion-Free) volume estimated by each company;
- The commodity scope included in the current commitment;
- The geographical scope of the commitment, detailing the regions covered;
- The percentage of direct suppliers traced back to the farm;
- The percentage of indirect suppliers traced back to the farm;
- The announcement date of the zero deforestation commitment.
Twelve traders are listed, and nine value attributes will be monitored with a cutoff date set for 2027.
It is essential to highlight that the information presented reflects public commitments and progress reported in sustainability reports, press releases, or official company websites, organized according to their market share.
Assessment Methodology and Definitions
Cut-off date: Date after which deforestation or conversion of native vegetation renders a given area or production unit non-compliant with commitments of no deforestation or no conversion of native vegetation, respectively. The SBTi FLAG Guidance and AFi guidance both recommend a cut-off date of 2020. It also aligns with cut-off dates used in regulatory mechanisms such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Target date: The date on which a certain company (or other entity issuing commitments or policies) intends to have fully implemented its commitments or policies. The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) has adopted a consensus recommendation that companies set a target date for eliminating deforestation and ecosystem conversion from their supply chains no later than 2025.
Reference date: The date from which deforestation or conversion associated with a given area or supply chain is measured and/or managed.
Traceability: The ability to follow a product or its components through stages of the supply chain (eg, production, processing, manufacturing, and distribution). In order to assure full traceability Businesses must collect geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the plots of land —the smallest identifiable production unit— where commodities are produced.
Plot (of land): An area of land with a particular ownership, land use, or other characteristic. A plot is frequently used as the basis for a cadaster or land registration system.
DCF Volume Verification Methodology: A Deforestation and Conversion-Free (DCF) Verification Methodology is a standardized framework used to assess and confirm that commodities or raw materials are produced without causing deforestation or the conversion of natural ecosystems after a specified cut-off date. For the present assessment this methodology is only valid when traceability to the plot of land —the smallest identifiable production unit— is established.
